Just an hour outside of Cape Town lies the picturesque village of Franschhoek, nestled in a valley of rolling vineyards and dramatic mountains. Known as South Africa’s food and wine capital, Franschhoek offers countless wine estates, each with its own charm. One of the most enjoyable and stress-free ways to experience them is by hopping aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram.
On our recent trip, we chose the Navy Line, and it turned out to be the perfect way to spend a day tasting, sipping, and soaking in the valley’s beauty.
The wine tram operates a hop-on, hop-off system with color-coded lines and each line offers a curated loop of wine estates. The Navy Line features some of the valley’s most stunning stops and the trams (and connecting buses) arrive on a fixed schedule, giving you about an hour at each estate before the next pickup.
This makes it easy: no need to worry about directions or driving after tastings—just enjoy.
First Stop: Boschendal
We kicked off at Boschendal, one of the most famous names in South African wine, dating back to 1685 and offering a mix of history, heritage, and modern flair. With its sprawling lawns shaded by ancient oak trees and mountains towering in the distance, it felt like the perfect scene-setter. We wandered through the gardens, sipped on crisp Chardonnay, and instantly felt the stress of city life melt away. Bochendal is a must for anyone who enjoys pairing wine with an idyllic setting, and if you’ve got time, their farm-to-table picnics looked dreamy!
Into the Valley: Plaisir & Vrede en Lust
From there, the tram carried us deeper into the valley. At Plaisir, the grandeur of the estate matched the richness of the wines — bold reds that practically demanded a slow swirl in the glass. It felt a little more old-world, the kind of place where you half-expect to see someone reading poetry under the trees. Pro-tip: try the fudge and wine pairing, it was MAGICAL!
Next up was Vrede en Lust (which literally means “Peace and Delight/Eagerness”), and the name couldn’t have been more fitting. The place was buzzing — groups laughing, glasses clinking, and the vibe much more lively. We opted for their Flagship tasting, which gave us the perfect mix of the best of the best at this vineyard.
Midday Brightness: Allée Bleue
By the time we rolled into Allée Bleue, the sun was high, and I was grateful for their fresh, modern feel. Everything here is accented with a splash of their signature blue — even the wine bottles. Their Shiraz Rose was crisp, refreshing, and exactly what we needed. Honestly, if summer had a flavor, that would be it! We grabbed some delicious lunch and took in the beautiful views before heading to our final stop.
Afternoon Views: Bartinney
The climb up to Bartinney was worth it for the views alone. Perched on the Helshoogte Pass, it’s the kind of place where you sip your wine slowly just so you have an excuse to sit and stare at the valley below a little longer. Small-batch, sustainable wines, gorgeous mountain scenery — this one stole a piece of my heart.
Since we decided to stay a little longer at each stop we didn't get to hit all the estates, but if you have more time, the Camberley, Le Pommier, and Zorgvliet estates are also on the Navy line and come highly recommended!
Making the Most of Your Day
Start early to maximize your tastings (the first tram departed from Groot Drakenstein around 9 am).
Book lunch in advance if there’s an estate you’re particularly keen on—spots fill up quickly, especially on weekends.
Mix it up: Some stops are better for full meals, others for quick tastings or even a dessert-and-wine pairing.
Stay hydrated and pace yourself—you’ll be sipping a lot of world-class wines.
Why It’s Worth the Trip
The Franschhoek Wine Tram is more than just wine tasting—it’s about experiencing the valley at a leisurely pace, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The Navy Line strikes a wonderful balance of large, lively estates and intimate boutique wineries. For a day trip from Cape Town, it’s hard to imagine a better blend of relaxation, indulgence, and exploration.
Whether you’re a serious wine enthusiast or just someone who enjoys a beautiful day out, the Franschhoek Wine Tram Navy Line is an unforgettable way to experience South Africa’s wine country.
