THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who participated in the first month of the book club last month! I loved hearing all of the responses about Gail Honeyman's Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. A new month starts tomorrow which means a NEW BOOK! I’ve heard such great things about the book I have selected for this month and am so excited to read it with all of you.
Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah is a collection of short stories that you will not be able to stop reading! It tackles a lot of the issues we are facing in this country. Here is the synopsis from GoodReads.com:
In the stories of Adjei-Brenyah’s debut, an amusement park lets players enter augmented reality to hunt terrorists or shoot intruders played by minority actors, a school shooting results in both the victim and gunman stuck in a shared purgatory, and an author sells his soul to a many-tongued god. Adjei-Brenyah's writing will grab you, haunt you, enrage, and invigorate you. By placing ordinary characters in extraordinary situations, Adjei-Brenyah reveals the violence, injustice, and painful absurdities that black men and women contend with every day. These stories tackle urgent instances of racism and cultural unrest and explore the many ways we fight for humanity in an unforgiving world.
In case you are new here, this how book club will work. I want to give those of you who want to participate time to get the book (and time to read it), so we’ll reconvene back here on the blog on December 16. You can click the image of the book above or the link at the beginning of this post to take you straight to Amazon to order it! If any of you have other favorite authors, genres, etc. please let me know in the comments so I can take them into consideration for our next book. Happy reading!
xoxo. Alexandra
